He is a Jedi. Jedis protect and serve. They look out for others before themselves. They sacrifice, they suffer, they just are.
He is a good Jedi. This is what he's meant to do, the way he's meant to breathe, the way he's meant to be a human. It just is.
That's why he doesn't get this...this attraction he has to the Queen. Yes, she's beautiful. But that's never mattered to him. He sees beautiful women all the time. Not only is the planet of Coruscant covered with them, it seems as if most of them are Jedi. His friends, Knights, the Council. They are beautiful.
No, it's not only that. When they first met, after they (Qui-Gon and himself, Jar-Jar hanging on by luck) rescued her, he saw no fear in her eyes. None. He knew that she would die for this planet, her planet. it was her duty and she would not back down, no matter how scared the inside of her body got, the outside would be loyal and in control. She was Queen.
He realizes how true that fact is. She's responsible for those people who can't speak for themselves, she fights for them, and he has to smile because for someone who can't feel and connect to the Force, she's an amazing Jedi.
Without knowing it, he sees how she follows the Jedi Code, maybe even more than some of the Jedi he knows.
He's observant, he's always been that way, but it takes him a while to realize that he doesn't notice anyone else as much as he does with her. Whenever she's around, anything she does, he picks up and he knows Qui-Gon can tell. Of course, he doesn't bright it up. He knows that his Padawan will talk to him, that he'll work things out, quietly, effectively, efficiently.
The thing is, he can't get her out of his head. The way she holds herself, the way she talks, the way she's so damn persistant and stubborn and truthful. Her eyes. That's how he knows. They don't lie because with her, the truth is more dangerous than any lie she could come up with.
So, he watches her out of the corner of his eye as the years go by, as their dreams (yes, theirs) fall and shatter and as she fights harder and harder and he's trying so damn hard to keep these fraying edges together, he knows what her face looks like.
Even when, as she's crying and Anakin's fallen to the Dark Side and broken both of their hearts, her eyes. They keep tell the truth, even as she slips away from him.
